1. ILST (Individual Learner Support Team)
Educators and principal meet every Wednesday.
Task: discuss learners with:
Learning problems/barriers; emotional development; disciplinary problems; language barriers
We do incorporate experts from the community
- social welfare
- Learner Support Advisor
- private/EMDC, if necessary.
Learners who eventually need to attend School of Skills. eg. Westcliff and/or De Grendel, may be admitted only if this team processed them. No Gr 7 parent may go to these schools and simply apply for enrolment. They will refer you back to the school. Learners with extreme learning barriers who has turned 14 and in Gr 6 will also qualify and be accepted in these schools. I (Miss Marjorie Schonken) am dealing with these referrals. Parents are most welcome to discuss it with me.
2. WHO ARE THE LEARNERS WITH LEARNING PROBLEMS OR LEARNING BARRIERS WHO RECEIVE LEARNING SUPPORT:
(a) Educators identify these learners in their interaction with them.
Should your child be identified you will receive a Parental Consent Form from the educator, which you must sign and return immediately. No learner can be supported unless we have received these forms.
(b) Notification by previous schools / psychologists
(c) Parents may request help
(d) Occupational therapists/Doctors
(e) Learners diagnosed by a doctor with ADD, ADHD, DYSLEXIA or any other medical reason why he/she manifests with learning difficulties.
NB! IF A CHILD NEEDS TO TAKE MEDICINE FOR ADD/ADHD, PLEASE NOTIFY THE TEACHER AND LSE. IT IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT MEDICATION TAKEN IS STRICTLY MONITORED. IF A CHILD IS DIAGNOSED TO TAKE MEDICINE AND A PARENT REFUSES TO GIVE PRESCRIBED MEDICINE, THIS CHILD CAN BE PHASED OUT IF HE/SHE DISRUPTS THE CLASS OR FAILS TO SUCCEED.
(f) A child receives Learning Support for 2 years, or less if succeeds, then he/she will be phased out. If he/she does not show enough progress in this period, the child will be supported by the Didactic or Remedial Team.
• Private Remedial Educators

LEARNING SUPPORT SPECIALIST
Miss Marjorie Schonken, withdraws learners at least twice a week during school hours. During these lessons, the focus is on Reading, Spelling and Writing. Miss Schonken also supports the learner in his/her class to observe the progress.
DIDACTIC HELP FOR MATHEMATICS LEARNERS
Each teacher supports the learners in their class who struggle with Mathematical concepts, skills and knowledge on a Tuesday afternoon from 14.45 – 15.30
REMEDIAL HELP FOR OTHER LEARNERS
Gr 4 - 7
Every educator helps to identify and support learners in their own respective classes.
Extra-mural help on Mondays 14.45 – 15.30.
Educators: Mrs Agulhas; Mrs Klue; Mrs Potgieter, Mrs la Grange and Miss Schonken
These learners are identified by their class educators and referred to the team. The focus will be on Reading (in both languages), Spelling and Mathematics.
You will be notified by means of a letter whether your child is on this program. These letters must be signed and returned immediately. No learner can be supported unless we have received these letters.
Parents, these are the learners who so easily slip through the system. We need your full support please. Please encourage your child to attend these classes regularly.
Should a learner miss a class, for whatever important reason, please notify us in writing.
NO VERBAL MESSAGES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
If a learner is absent from this support system for more than 2 weeks without notification, the learner will be replaced by another learner, as the need is great.
